Angels and Saints

—Poetry and Artwork by Douglas Polk, Kearney, NE

PRACTICE

life at 62, reminds me of football practice,
when I was young,
drills done to learn to fight the pain and ache,
of weak muscles,
and undisciplined minds,
preparation to play a young man's game.

WITHIN

within the soul,
beauty exists,
or so I am told,
if seen,
only out of the corner of the eye,
or reflected in eyes,
looking back at me,
humbled, and unworthy,
confused as to the reasons why,
beauty exists,
within the soul.

SAINT E

he sits among angels and saints,
laughing and talking,
angels and saints,
invisible to everyone else,
envious, I ask what they are talking about,
sadly smiling, my son smiles,
"You wouldn't understand Dad",
"It is mostly about places you cannot be,
and events you cannot see",
"You are not yet welcome, among angels and saints".

Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly.
