Zen Cleveland

LETTER TO MEDUSA

Zen Salutations
in Seventeen Syllables
to you Editors—

Enclosed are haiku
to share in your hip journal
from Cleveland's cold streets.

May they find favor
and a place to rest between
your brilliant covers.

Spring comes with red eyes
and a chorus of wild screams . . .
once more, cicadas

Crouched on this cold beach,
I swallow green smoke, swallow
the Buddha's true zen.

Thoughts of Kerouac's
flat Ohio plains while rain
beats jazz on our heads.

Some men get drunk on
whiskey. My people get drunk
on Cleveland's cold zen.

Let the lake waves rock
my weary soul to slumber
and sleep my wild mind.
