A Serious Game

MAKING CONTACT

A small hand reaches out.
Don't ignore it.

Something from our planet
senses your presence
and wishes to make contact.

How delicate and small it is
compared to you.

You must not grab it.
It needs a gentle touch,
to be recognized and appreciated

for what it is, another part of
this earth, as it knows you are.

SERIOUS

No one can be sure
of whether or not
he is serious.
Either he makes
a statement to which
you respond
because you believe
he is serious,
and it strikes a chord
in you,

or he might respond
in a serious manner
to something you have said,
and you take him up on it,
but as soon as he sees
that he has been taken
seriously, he will renege
and confess to have
been only kidding,
not serious at all.

You wonder if
he fancies himself
a jokester, or
does he back off
because he lacks
the courage to
seriously live up to
anything he says,
          maybe a bit of both.

THE GAME

Life is a game, a serious one.
To play it well, know yourself,
your strengths, your limits.

Consider goals.  Find allies.
Know your opponents.
Learn the rules.  Play fair.

Be prepared to lose.  Try again.
Defeat is not an option.
Keep moving forward.

Give it all you have
for as long as you can.
Play the game to win.

Enjoy the game.

ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD

I've noticed as I age, time has speeded up on all
cylinders,
determined to get me to the finish line much faster
than
I want to get there.  I must regard death as the end,
for it is the end of all I know.  I can't be sure if
there is more.

I had goals, but I never knew how to reach them.
I continued my slow, agonizing dance, hoping for
an out-of-nowhere epiphany.

Now that my body is showing signs of systems
failure,
the dance inside me is a fandango.  Drums beat
in a staccato rhythm, putting the drummer at risk
for carpal tunnel syndrome.

What/ can I still/ accomplish?
What/ will be/ my legacy?

I want to remain.  I want to resound in purpose
and memory
through all of time, through all the time in
this world.

TREES
—Linda Klein

The tree extended a branch
offering me the world
encapsulated in a drop of rain
and I knew at once
that trees actually do this.
