Building to Harvest

Impressions of Summer

human/nature

standing in blessed coolness
air sweet as water
caresses my bare arms

stretch in both directions
plant my feet
luxuriate in healing breeze

scent of sun-dried wild chamomile
August’s mature grass
both green and brown

whirr of mating dragonflies
winging, stationary, racing in glee
play, love, die

another summer builds to harvest
Earth’s bounty still plentiful, glorious

NIGHT SKY WITH CHIMNEY
After Night Sky by Chris Feldman

the stars are a rainbow of diamonds
sparkling against black velvet sky
their fire like ice, alien infinity

in terrible contrast
brick-by-brick, chimney reaches up
an exquisite challenge
an infant’s bawling insistence
cry of Life, Home, Humanity

SAVOR

daily bread, heavy wheat
oven-fried chicken
breaded with cornmeal and cayenne

my lover’s eyes, magnetic wells
his embrace, the warmest blanket

the white mountain ringed with pine
sunrise setting crystal afire at mountain’s tip

the ether around it ringing
in jubilation of all that is holy

TO GREEN TARA

ever alert, she sits on her dais
in modified lotus, raised knee ready
to spring her into action
all senses alive to any disturbance
the cries in the night, help needed
simultaneously at peace, focused internally
she remains devoted to serve, to help, to heal

TO A STATUE OF GUAN YIN

marble raiment most pure
face and form shine
soft expression
gentle, eternal
comfort and grace

Ann Wehrman and Chris Feldman have collaborated again, joining her poems and his photos, and we in the Kitchen are grateful to them for their fine work!

This morning, another “The Way of Poetry” workshop on Asian poetry with Louis Osofsky will take place from 10:30am-12pm at Pivot Coffee, 1430 28th St. in Sacramento (I mistakenly left this off the calendar). Online, Kai Coggin from Arkansas will present a Poetry Workshop this morning for the Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center.

Poetry in Locke takes place this afternoon, celebrating the release of and readers from
Voices: 2022 by Cold River Press. Besides lots of poetry, there will be music, food (BBQ/potluck—bring your favorite dish) and even a cornhole tournament! Also today: Mosaic of Voices in Lodi features Janet Rodriguez and Gary Thomas, and Poetry at the African Market at Florin Square presents Poetic Butterfly “Floetician” plus open mic at Florin Square in Sacramento.

And don’t forget the Capturing Wakamatsu workshop in Placerville tomorrow. Click UPCOMING NORCAL EVENTS at the top of this column for details about these and other future poetry events in the NorCal area.
