Where Clouds and Mountains Live

THE BIGGEST DRUG DEALER IN TOWN

The world that we think exists
and the world that does exist
are 2 different worlds—
There is a world
where people go to church
and go to work—
and underneath that
is the world of the illegal
where prostitutes and drug dealers live—
Near that world is the world of illegal things
from guns to drugs and sex near the pawn shops
where I used to work near the world of the desperate
where the junkies steal bikes, lawn equipment and construction tools
next to where the strippers pawn their jewelry
and just around the corner is Satan himself,
the biggest drug dealer in town,
but just beyond him is the natural,
where clouds and mountains live
and this is the home of God himself
and I go visit Him
when I tire
of seeing the Devil
everywhere
in the world of men.

WE ARE WHAT WE DO

Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into
the world, he is responsible for everything he does.
                                            —Jean Paul Sartre

If we are defined by what we do,
who are we then?
Writers, workers,
pursuers of food, sex,
video game players, overeaters,
lovers of children, workers…
what?
Are we killers, drivers,
haters, fighters, slaves,
terrified of being free?
Who are we?
What are we?
Created by God?
In God's image?
If we are defined by what we do,
who are we then?
If we were created by God,
in God's image,
if we are killers,
self-absorbed
haters,
what does that make God?
Is God absolved for the mistakes we make
as a result of our nature?
Or are we totally free?
Free to love, to choose peace
negotiate, put down our guns,
stop fighting?
What is your choice?
I choose not to kill myself.
I choose to love my children.
I choose to help whom I care for.
What is your choice?

HAIKU ON JOHN WILKES BOOTH

Last Words:
I look at my hands—
"Useless, useless," I repeat,
Death my only claim.

The words we say to ourselves at the end:
"Useless, useless," he
Says to himself, looking at
His hands—John Wilkes Booth

Epiphany:
The only thing that
matters is our history;
The rest is useless.

THE DAY ARRIVES

Aragorn:  What does your heart tell you?
Gandalf the White:  Look to my coming on the first light of the fifth day, at dawn look to the east.
Aragorn:  No news of Frodo?
Gandalf the White:  No word. Nothing.
Aragorn:  We still have time. Every day Frodo moves closer to Mordor.
Gandalf the White:  Do we know that?
Aragorn:  What does your heart tell you?
Gandalf the White:  That Frodo is alive. Yes. Yes, he is alive.

If you survive the night, the day arrives.
In the light of day, all hope is not lost.
What does your conscience tell you?
Do not run away; do not run towards your problems,
Your concerns, your fears
But face them. Let them come to you.
Do not bring them up. Do not be in a hurry to face them,
But turn to them, with the light of the Sun present.
Unexpected allies may appear; fears may disappear.
Turn to the sun with hope.

MEDITATIONS ON GOOD AND EVIL
—Jean Jones

Ourselves alone:
I try to do right
Here, where nothing is certain,
What makes us do right?

Origins of Evil:
Like anything else,
It comes down to what you choose,
And what you decide.

Because they want to:
People have asked me
Why people hurt each other?
Easy—They want to.

The equation so hard to understand:
God is all knowing,
God is all powerful, yet
Good people suffer.
