Mother's Day

THANKS, MOM
—Caschwa, Sacramento, CA

my mother was a chameleon
of sorts, the birth order of her
offspring dictating what role
and color of parent she would
assume

for the first born, my elder
brother, she was an elder
stateswoman

for my younger brother, she
marched the trenches of the
last born

and I was the tricky guy, a
middle child, forcing her to
conjure the image of a middle
parent, her performance
earning her one bouquet of
red roses after another…
