Great Price
—Poetry and Visuals by Smith, Cleveland, OH

Mom sez
doctor dropped me on my head after birth
perhaps to knock some sense into me
if so, it didn't work

She also sed I was circumcised
and yet I'm foreskinned
so what do I know

I do know life eats life to live
so we kill
consume the dead

And of course
at some point we're all food

DEATH IN FISH AND FIRE

1.

Bought six fish 15 days ago—
two tetra neons,
two red barbs,
two guppies.

One red barb is in the bottom corner
trying unsuccessfully to swim
dying from ick,
its companion hovering by its side.

Even fish care.

I feel dark
because my desire to protect
is useless
I'm as vulnerable as that red barb
I or my beloved
could be bitten by human ick
at any moment
and it's only luck or invisible design
we're here at all.

2.

Life as fuel for flame is true
for I have studied many a campfire
over long hours and many tokes,
and notice the first crime in fire
is to stand out,
be a splinter raised from the grain
and whooomp, you're gone.

3.

But then
no swim, no fire, no life.

4.

Life is death.

 Heaven

Death sneaks into your mind
looks around
rearranges the furniture

Rolling Koan

Dig a hole below zero
crawl in and wait
till the good gaze wins

Life is strange
stage after stage
