A Simple Man

—Poem and Photos By Caschwa (Carl Bernard Schwartz),
Sacramento, CA

I AM A SIMPLE MAN

when I bite into a combination burrito
I don’t need to know the names of all
the ingredients and their origins and
derivations

leave me alone to enjoy the taste

when I check the weather forecast to
see if it’s likely to rain, I don’t need to be
reminded how our terrestrial equator
projects beyond Earth to some celestial
equator, giving us a Solstice twice a year

leave me alone to enjoy the raindrops

when I feel in the mood to tap my feet
in time to some music, I don’t need to
know whether the lead violin player is
stroking upbow or downbow, or whether
the bass drum player has lost his place
and is just guessing

leave me alone to enjoy the music

when I begin to read a poem, I don’t need
to know what the top academic minds in
the world have to say about the format,
semantics, techniques, or accents

leave me alone to enjoy the flow

Thanks, Caschwa! Love the line about the bass drum—been there myself, I have….
