Where a Bird Sings

THERE’S A PLACE

There’s a place
I have not gone before
just around the bend
and now I know.
There’s a place
not far down the road
where a bird sings
not too loud, not too soft.
Let’s go there.
I want to go with you.
It does not have to be now.
It is not so far away.
We can walk there.

Where a bird sings . . .

RAINS OVER PAINS

I welcome the rains over pains.
This heart cannot take anymore.
Things get too complicated.
Some days I do not wish to exist.

There are days without pains
and days without rains. If I choose
the days without one of them,
I would love the rains over pains.

I wish to exist as the rains wash
over my sadness and if it ever
leaves for good I suppose it is
the rains that I would thank.

THE INFINITY OF SORROW

The infinity of sorrow
has me coming and
going. The somber sky
is ever distant with

a yellow moon
surrounded by darkness.
I feel sorrow gnaw
on the back of my heart.

SLEEPY EYES

Nature drops rain
into my sleepy eyes
and I like it.

It is all I need
to awaken.
It is all I need
to get to thinking
with my tired mind.

Each drop
from the sky
makes things real.
I am seeing
more than ever.

I was blind,
so blind,
because
I could not see.

Sentimentality
makes things tough.

I feel for the rain
like I feel for you,
my easy friend.

SLEEPING THROUGH LIFE

Instead of sleeping through life
try to learn everything you need
to survive. Try a little of this and
a little of that. One of these days
you will see God’s face. Today is
not that day unless it is. There is
no antidote to death. Do not bang
your head against the wall or
sleep through this life when you

could choose better things. Be
free like the birds that fly and
you will start feeling better about
yourself. Do not let  damp weather
stop you. The gentle rain will not
hurt. Lose yourself in books when
unfavorable elements are stacked
against you. Take a walk on the
side of life instead of overpriced
eateries. You will feel good about
feeding yourself with your own hands.

THE PLAGUE

Now and then
a plague comes
around to
turn your world
upside down.

It offers
love sometimes
and friendship
with a few
benefits.

In the end
it will rip
you to shreds
and you find
you wasted

a year or
two, maybe
even five,
restraining
orders and

change of cell
numbers and
places where you
are social
with others.

You do not
need that kind
of plague. The
pandemic’s
bad enough.

True love will
find you in
the end. I
know that song
pretty well.

STAY WITH ME
—Luis Cuauhtemoc Berriozabal

Do me a favor?
Stay with me
until I go to sleep.

I want you to be
the last thing
I see before I slumber.

You do not have to
stay all night.
I know we are not there.
