Cool and Sly

White Heron Walking
—Poems and Visuals by Smith, Cleveland, OH

STATUS REPORT 292

There's cool and there's sly
and there's wrong and there's wry
and there's why

How I got from there to here
from birth to bier
unclear

No right or wrong
I find strong enough
for long

It's all for upper one
so none won
in done

This but game
due blame
aim

Rule ply
cruel cry
a day in the life of the dead

 Echo

CLEVELAND (much of the time)

Drive
on grey
from grey to grey
over grey beneath grey
through grey
to

 Steampunk

Another toke
another coffee
another not enough sleep
so keep moving
like a shark in dark water
looking for light

 Wallflower

SIN, SENSE, AND SENRYU

Since we all have pupils
we must all be teachers

The outside whirl
is creeping in—
oh dear

Uncertain within
uneasy without
welcome to the future

I'm trying to pass as human
but can't find the passing lane

I watch the elevator doors close—
do those people inside
still exist?

Old haiku ripen
like the cherry blossom—
I'm senryu and gone

The eye is never full
the I ever fool

 Photon

There's this whisper
beneath my silence
wondering why

 Cat Attack

Black cat
saunters saucy
fur so sure of self

 Tunnel's End

The locusts come
rise from death to sing of love
before becoming husk

 Rising Slide

STATUS REPORT 293

Don't know what I'm doing
don't know where I've been

Don't think I ever reached wretched
but getting there

Down to Jesus, adult stores, and steak
the spirit, the flesh, and the late

Last stop—Predestination
where do I get my ticket punched?

It looks bleak here
on Bleeder Street

Today’s LittleNip:

She’s the dew
on my petal
refracting the light

_______________

Good to have a status report from Smith today (Steven B. Smith), telling us in his ever-intriguing way how life is in Cleveland! Sounds like it’s a bit foggy…

On this side of the continent, Cal. Lawyers for the Arts will hold their Artistic License Awards benefit at Sierra 2 Center on 24th St. tonight, starting at 5:30pm. And The Other Voice in Davis will be featuring Vicki Carroll and Aeisha Jones plus open mic tonight at 7:30pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Patwin Road in Davis. Scroll down to the blue column (under the green column at the right) for info about these and other upcoming poetry events in our area—and note that more may be added at the last minute.

—Medusa, celebrating our SnakePals near and far!
