Want to Write

Rachel Pevsner

FLESHPEN
—Rachel Pevsner, Davis

want to write
           want to write
want to create stories
           want to write
want to play god
           want to write
want to write
           want to dip my pen
           want to drink my ink
want to flatten my paper
want to flatten my mind
           want to eat some dinner
           want to walk the dog
want to destroy
           want

want to write

PIANIST IN A LIGHTNING STORM

Black fingers on white keys
Bring notes to fall like rain
On deaf ears:
While the pedal, like thunder,
Claps.

GANDHI WOULD PROBABLY SAY SOMETHING ABOUT CHANGE
—Rachel Pevsner

It is a foggy city: the mist is everywhere.
Like smoke rising from a chimney, it curls
And spreads and engulfs the streets.
On the clouded black street:
Skateboard wheels grinding pavement,
A bus braking, wheels turning,
Fire truck sirens sound,
And the birds are chirping back at each other
Oblivious to the “cancellation” of life
That is being charged on the cement.
Heels clicking
Spokes turning
Peace Corps people and a
Fed Ex delivery man
Walk by.
They pay attention to
“organic coffee” and “toss one back.”
In the cash register, “caching” coins are dropping
And the cashier says, “Thank you. Have a nice day!”
Making a difference has always been a matter of applying yourself.

CERTAIN EVENTS AWAKEN DEEP THOUGHTS
—Rachel Pevsner

He drops a rose on a dirt-covered hill
And sits next to the mound.
Is it really the force of the human will
That makes the Earth go round?
